The Climate Resilient And Sustainable Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme (CRS-ICZM) is an initiative to improve the resilience of the coastlines of Barbados to climate-related impacts, as well as to augment the Coastal Zone Management Unit’s delivery of coastal zone management services to citizens of and visitors to our shores.

The Barbados Marine Spatial Plan is a marine management process being undertaken by the Government of Barbados as an integral element to its commitment to sustainable development through the development of its blue economy. The Barbados Marine Spatial Plan (BMSP) aims to create balance between users, and uses of the marine space, giving due consideration to the importance of the ocean and its resources to our communities, to sustaining lives and livelihoods, to preserving our cultural heritage patrimony and to our way of life in Barbados.

In 2012, the Government of Barbados with partnership funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) embarked on the Coastal Risk Assessment and Management Programme (CRMP), a multi-year development programme aimed at building resilience to coastal hazards through improved conservation and management of the coastal zone of Barbados.

The Coastal Infrastructure Programme (CIP) began in 2002 and formally ended in 2009 with the opening of the Rockley Boardwalk, subsequently renamed the Richard Haynes Boardwalk. The CIP was jointly funded by the Government of Barbados and the Inter-American Development Bank at a cost of U.S. $24.2 million. The principle objective of the Programme was to ensure a healthy environment and continued economic development of Barbados through improved management and conservation of the coastal zone.

Sir William Halcrow and Partners Ltd (U.K.) and Consulting Engineers Partnership (Barbados) were the two companies hired as consultants to implement this project which was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank. The study area for the project was from Maycock’s, St. Lucy to South Point, Christ Church in a clockwise direction.

The Feasibility and Pre-Investment Coastal Conservation Study (1991-1995), which followed the Diagnostic and Pre-Feasibility Coastal Conservation Study (1983-1984), was the second major step in pursuit of the Unit’s overall objective. This project was implemented by the consultants Delcan.

The 1983-1984 Diagnostic and Pre-Feasibility Coastal Conservation Study was the first major project work executed by the Unit. The study was designed to determine and assess the causes of coastal erosion in Barbados (west and south coasts) and to make recommendations on remedial strategies. This work was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
