As one of the outputs of the Coastal Risk Assessment and Management Programme (CRMP) the CZMU has installed three oceanographic buoys along the south, east and north coasts of Barbados (see map below). The buoys are located in deep water (>80m) and will provide the CZMU with data required to accurately model how open ocean waves and currents translate to the wave and current patterns observed in the nearshore region. This increased knowledge will enable the Unit to better understand beach erosion and accretion trends, and enhance the effectiveness of beach protection/restoration interventions in the future.
The parameters being captured by these buoys include wave height and direction, current speed and direction, wind speed and direction and seawater temperature. Data from the buoys can be accessed via the following links:
